Do You Need Scaffolding for Roof Repairs?
Published 1 February 2025 · Updated 19 July 2026
Not every roof repair needs a full scaffold — but many do. Here's how to know the difference.
When a scaffold is required
Most re-roofs, chimney repairs, extensive tile replacements and gutter renewals need a full access scaffold with edge protection. The Work at Height Regulations expect collective fall protection wherever practical — that means edge-protected platforms, not just harnesses.
When a tower is enough
For a single-tile replacement, gutter clear or short inspection a mobile tower may be enough, provided the roof pitch and eaves height allow safe working.
FAQs
Can I use a ladder for a roof repair?
Ladders should only be used for very short access tasks. Any prolonged working at height should be from a scaffold or tower with edge protection.
